Conscious Gift Guide http://kalya.ca/2018/12/18/conscious-gift-guide/ Tue, 18 Dec 2018 21:27:55 +0000 http://kalya.ca/?p=675 With the holidays upon us, we could all use a little inspiration, whether it be from entertaining ideas to vacation plans. For many of us, gift giving tends to dominate this festive season. It can be easy to become lost in the commercial side of holiday giving, but here, in our Conscious Gift Guide, we lay out a few ways you can give with integrity.

  1. Go Clean (Beauty): It seems we are all a bit more conscious about the products we choose to include in our beauty regimen these days. Avoiding harmful ingredients is a priority for many, but we still want to nourish our skin with the very best. At Kalya, Summer Fridays is our latest clean beauty addiction. The brand offers indulgent face masks that, in addition to being formulated without the likes of sulphates, parabens, formaldehydes, phthalates, synthetic fragrance and other harmful ingredients, it is vegan and cruelty-free. The Jet Lag mask is the holy grail of hydrating masks. Part face mask, part hydrating moisturizer, this mask leaves your skin dewy, glowing and hydrated. Your face (and loved one) will thank you.

  2. Give to a Good Cause: Everyone has that one person on their list that makes gift giving nearly impossible. For that person who may have everything they need, you might consider a gift to charity. It never goes out of style to support organizations that provides care and resources to those in need, spread love and education, and protect our environment. Donating to a friend or loved one’s favourite cause in their honour is a wonderful way to share the holiday spirit. The list of deserving non-profits run the gamut, from international organizations championing human rights to local grassroots groups aiding the community. Here are a few suggestions for your consideration:

    1. Sun Youth/Jeunesse Au Soleil: A Montreal-based organization founded by two childhood friends over 60 years ago, Sun Youth is an invaluable resource to its community, doing everything from enabling youth participation in sports to providing food to those in need.

      Sun Youth Organization

      Sun Youth Organization

    2. Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal: The mission statement of the Native Women’s Shelter is to provide Aboriginal women and their children with a safe and supportive environment. And, they do just that. Native communities are among the most marginalized in North America, and the women within these communities even more so. If you would like to help on the road to reconciliation, please consider a donation to this fine organization.

    3. The International Rescue Committee:  This organization devoted to aiding those who have been affected by conflict and disaster. They are currently providing much needed support on the ground in Yemen, and they also publish a list of humanitarian crises of which we should all be aware in the new year. Donate and you will help this big world feel a bit smaller.

  3. Support an Artist: There is nothing more sophisticated than gifting a piece of art. And, there is nothing more satisfying than investing in local talent. With the triumverate of social media, online shopping and pop-up market initiatives, it has never been easier to seek out and engage with local artists. The Fine Black Pen is one such artist. Created by Montreal-based multi-media artist, Veronika Gruntovskaya, the Fine Black Pen produces magical weaves of all shapes and sizes that add depth and character to any living space, as well beautiful handmade wooden ornaments with wood-burned images. She also caters to custom orders. Find her on Instagram and Facebook @thefineblackpen.

  4. Shop Local: By now, the benefits of shopping local have been fully expounded upon us all. Supporting local retailers is a great way to keep the flow of money within your community and help smaller companies remain viable in this modern world of big brands. Explore your neighbourhood to discover the plethora of local retailers deserving of your hard earned dollars. In the every stylish Plateau Mont-Royal, Freitag Concept Boutique, is one such local gem that offers a stunningly curated collection of baubles that will catch anyone’s eye. It is the perfect stop for anyone looking to indulge a loved one for the holidays, offering accessories for both women and men, and a comfortable shopping experience in a beautifully lit space where you will be ensconced with all that glitters.

  5. Inspire: Books are always a good choice. Books have the power to motivate, educate, provoke and affect. By giving a book this holiday season, you can transport someone to a fantastic world, share a new hobby, encourage healthy eating habits, and inspire curiosity. An excellent example is “Comfortable with Uncertaintly: 108 Teachings on Cultivating Fearlessness and Compassion” by renowned American Buddhist nun Pema Chödrön. The collection of short teachings is a profound reminder of Buddhist teachings for the novice and expert alike, and will help ease you into 2019 with a focus on mindfulness and gratitude.

  6. Get into Eco-Fashion: The pitfalls of fast fashion have come into sharp relief in recent years. While this industry may satisfy our style needs in the most expedient and economical way, it has many unpleasant social and environmental repercussions. But, luckily for us fashionistas, not all fast fashion is created equal. The Reformation is a L.A.-based brand that puts ecological practices at the forefront, all while steadily producing divinely feminine outfits for all occasions, from your epic street style moments to your wedding day. The forward-thinking fashion retailer employs green clothing production techniques to minimize its environmental footprint, relying on eco-friendly infrastructure and materials, and even transforms excess offcut material from other designers and manufacturers in the industry into the highly in demand products in their catalogue. In addition to this, The Reformation provides a RefScale for each product sold, allowing clients to track the ecological impact of their purchase, as well as investing in offset techniques to build new forests. RELIEVING KNEE PAIN http://kalya.ca/2017/10/31/relieving-knee-pain/ Tue, 31 Oct 2017 17:52:24 +0000 http://kalya.ca/?p=575 Knees are the most commonly injured joints in the body. Considering the fact that the simple act of walking up stairs creates pressure across your knee joints equivalent to four times your body weight, it isn’t surprising. Everyday wear and tear can end up hurting your mobility. Here are a few things you can do to lessen the pain.

-Wall side

Stand against a wall. Bend your knees 30 degrees. Slide down the wall, then straight up again. And do not allow knees to go over the toes. Repeat 5-10 times.

-Bent-leg rises

Sitting in a chair, straighten one leg in the air (don’t lock your knee). Hold for about one minute. Bend your knee to lower the leg about halfway to the floor. Hold for 30 seconds. Return to starting position. Completes 4 reps per leg.

-Abductor raise

Lie on your side, propped up on one elbow. Keep the leg on the floor bent and the other leg straight. Slowly lift the top leg, hold for 5-10 seconds. Then lower. Do 1-3 sets with 12-13 reps each. Don’t forget to rest between set. Repeat for other leg.

-Stationary bike

Biking is a good way to increase strength and range of motion, even if it is just for 10 minutes. Make sure you have the right position for your legs (knees should be 15 degrees).

Kalya Travel Guide: TIFF Experience http://kalya.ca/2017/10/30/kalya-travel-guide-tiff-experience/ Mon, 30 Oct 2017 19:28:45 +0000 http://kalya.ca/?p=547 Kalya is committed to encouraging the exploration of this beautiful planet while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In our latest travel guide, we share tips on how to enjoy one of the world’s premiere film festivals, the Toronto International Film Festival, while staying active and eating responsibly.

TIFF is a must for any cinephile. The film festival, now it in its fifth decade, features the best the film industry has to offer, from the stunningly shot and acted Platform prize winner, Sweet Country, an Australian period piece focusing on the aboriginal experience in the 1920’s, to the Grolsch People’s Choice prize winner, 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, a darkly comic character driven drama surely set for Oscar glory. But, when you’re not crowding the red carpet for a glimpse of your favourite celebrity, partaking in shenanigans on festival street, or indulging in movie marathons at the Princess of Wales Theatre or Roy Thompson Hall, you can balance out your TIFF experience with these healthy tips:

  1. Stay active while enjoying the films: Sitting in a darkened theatre may not be the most active way to spend your time, even if it is thoroughly enjoyable. Find your balance by walking as much as you can, to and from venues and between screenings. Also, the lines for screenings tend to be incredibly long. While waiting, treat yourself to a bit of standing yoga to keep yourself flexible and relaxed. Think tree pose, mountain pose and the like. Finally, bring your own healthy snacks. Instead of the traditional buttery popcorn, pack your own homemade kale chips, nuts, fruit or other low-calorie, fresh and tasty snacking options. Not only is this a healthy option, it is also a budget-friendly one. Finally, relax and enjoy the intellectual and visual stimulation of your festival selection.

  2. Take a green break: When you need a break from the silver screen, head outside for an invigorating walk. Even if it’s just a sidewalk jaunt down one of Toronto’s many busy streets, take a moment to enjoy the fresh air and scenery. Take it up a notch, by temporarily escaping the urban playground with a visit to High Park, an expansive natural park in the heart of the city. With it’s beautiful hiking trails, dog-friendly areas, playgrounds and lakefront view, High Park is the perfect counter-programming to your film festival marathons.

  3. Leave the city behind: Another brilliant way to spend your off-duty festival time is a day trip to Center Island. The island, only minutes away by the easily accessible and affordable ferry (see schedule here) or water taxi, is the perfect destination for an afternoon picnic. Stock up on your favourite healthy snacks at the local Whole Foods Market beforehand, and enjoy your afternoon meal overlooking Lake Ontario in the company of some incredibly amiable water fowl. Follow this up with an adventurous, cardio-packed biking tour of the island courtesy of the local bike rentals, or a walk along the beach (you have your choice of traditional or clothing optional zones). Finally, finish your day with a tour of the scenic marina, before heading back to city life.

  4. Choose sustainability: There is no more classic combination than dinner and a movie. And, there is no better place to indulge your pre- or post-film appetite than David Chang’s Momofuku. With locations in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas, Momofuku is a necessary culinary experience when visiting T.O., not just because its noodle bar menu boasts a mouth-watering and memorable ramen soup, but also because the restaurant takes pride in its sustainable practices. Momofuku sources its ingredients from local farms and fisheries with responsible practices. If that wasn’t reason enough to visit, there is always the temptation of dessert at Milk Bar, Momofuku’s affiliated bakery, featuring award-winning chef Christina Tosi’s innovative take on sweet creations. The birthday cake truffles are the perfect combination of European tradition and North American taste, all in one mouth-watering little package.
